Many of Portland's water mains were installed 100 years ago and as the metal ages it weakens and the pressure in the pipe causes it to fail. Around Midnight Tuesday a pipe 24-inches in diameter under West Burnside at 4th Avenue broke. It washed away the road bed and blew a hole in the pavement.
The water flooded nearby streets and overwhelmed storm drains. The water caused damage to the Embassy Suites Hotel and Dante's Club.
The pipe is nine feet deep, so it'll require a major excavation to repair. Traffic of East Burnside is detoured. The repairs are expected to take all day.
